Sometimes when she sleeps, he stands at the edge of her bed, and watches.

Never closer than that, but close enough to picture pale fingers tangling in the yellow of her hair; and her hair, he knows without knowing, is strong and sweet, a crown of gold for a queen carved of ice and stone. And she is no child of the light, but kin to the darkness, instead.

And where there is black in his heart, it calls to her; and he wonders, but never knows, if her skin is as soft and cool as he imagines, her lips a contrast, warm and smooth.

Sometimes when she sleeps, she dreams of him, watching.
